Scarecrow in Gray, Barry D. Yelton, 2006, ISBN 9780595401857

Francis Yelton (actual ancestor of the author) is a reluctant participant in the last months of the Civil War. He would much rather stay on his North Carolina farm, but, he also does not want to be known as the 19th Century equivalent of a draft dodger. Along with Whit Whitaker, his neighbor and fellow farmer, Yelton joins the Confederate Army.

These are desperate times for the Southerners. The men are haggard, exhausted collections of skin and bones. Starvation is an everyday concern; when there is food, which is rare, it is usually moldy and inedible. More men are lost to disease and desertion than to northern artillery. Deserters are usually shot on sight. The war’s outcome is a foregone conclusion; it’s only a matter of time.

Alongside small pockets of humanity, Whit and Francis see the horror of war, up close and personal. The first Union soldier that Francis kills in hand-to-hand combat is only a teenager, who forgives Francis as he dies. Both Francis and Whit are injured, so they experience a field hospital. It’s a place where the main medical activity seems to be amputating of limbs, and the only available anesthetic is whiskey. Whit loses one of his eyes, and the eye socket has to be cleaned out, to prevent the onset of gangrene. Both men are at Appomattox Court House to witness the official end of the war. On their way back home, both men are distressed to learn that the killing does not end just because the war is over.

As much as possible, this is a historically accurate novel, and it shows. It was written by someone who really knows his way around the finer points of the War Between The States. By all means, read the official histories of the Civil War. To get the point of view of the average soldier, the reader could do a lot worse than start right here.

There are many sleep apnea dangers that most people don’t know exist. While some people may think of it as common snoring, sleep apnea is something that needs to be taken very seriously. In fact, if left untreated, the sleeping disorder can cause death via congestive heart failure. Sleep apnea, (apnea literally meaning without breath) is something that affects men, women, adults and children. It is characterized by a minimum of 10 second intervals between breaths, which result in either a neurological arousal or a blood oxygen desaturation of at least three or four percent. No group of people is immune from the disastrous consequences of the disorder, which makes it extremely scary. Since it’s something at occurs when you sleep, many people who sleep alone don’t know that they suffer from it until it’s too late.

Some of the sleep apnea dangers that can act as symptoms include loud snoring (with periods of breathlessness immediately followed by gasps for air), morning headaches and esophageal reflux. Because of the lack of sleep that many sleep apnea patients suffer from, there are often side effects that can be just as troubling as the disorder itself. For example, many people who have sleep apnea also experience depression, irritability and anxiety. These three things can combine to really mess with a persons head. Imagine feeling depressed and angry all of the time, not knowing that something like sleep apnea is causing your troubles. Many times the side effects can get treated with pharmaceutical drugs, but these do nothing to combat the apnea itself.

The sleep apnea dangers are literally too numerous to list. If you or a loved one are concerned about having the disorder, it is imperative that you see a doctor immediately to begin treatment. If you don’t, the consequences can be severe.

Whatever the size of your patio, you can enhance the ambiance by adding one or more fountains. A fountain is one of those outdoor water features that will really allow you to enjoy the sounds of nature as you enjoy your morning coffee or have a drink with friends. The stream of water through the air also has a cooling effect on the hot air of the summer. You can have one that sits on the deck or the table or a fountain that attaches to the wall.

When choosing wall fountains you do need to consider the decor of your outdoor living space. You need to look at the exterior design of your home and the materials from which your patio is made. For example, a fountain made of brick would look out of place on a wooden patio and vice versa. You would make it a focal point of the patio, but for the wrong reasons. Precast concrete and reconstituted stone are the best choices for fountains that would work well on any patio.

Patio fountains come in all types of designs – animals, children, classical, mythical creatures, angels – the list goes on and on. Whatever design you choose, you will need to have a submersible pump installed to keep the water flowing continuously through the fountain so that it pours out into the basin and then goes back to the top again.

If you have an empty corner to fill on your patio, then choosing one of the many resin wall fountains available will help you complete the decor. If you have a patio made of wood, it is very easy to build your own fountain using two different sizes of whiskey barrels or even large flower pots.

You simply make a pool for the water from the larger one and use the smaller one as the point from which the water pours. You can place the submersible pump inside the upper barrel and have a connecting pipe to bring the water from the pool into the pump, from which it pours out continuously.

Patio fountains are small, which means they are portable. You can move it around on the patio or even have it sitting on the top of a table. This flexibility in being able to change the position means you can change the look of your patio whenever you wish. Many of the modern designs are solar powered so that you don’t have to depend on the light on the patio to be able to enjoy the sight of the fountain along with the sounds at night.

This eliminates the need to have the wall mounted fountain close to an electrical outlet when you want to have it illuminated at night. The solar panel can be quite a distance away from the fountain and this adds to its portability. Thus you can enjoy its beauty even if you have it placed in a shady area of the patio.

You can use patio fountains to turn this area of your outdoor living space into an oasis. Even if you live in an apartment, you can have a fountain on the patio to make this area a place of tranquility. These blend in with the decor and the sounds of the trickling water blend with nature, as well as the natural materials used in the construction of both the fountain and the patio.

Gin rummy is a popular card game designed for two persons, and created at the beginning of the twentieth century by Elwood T. Baker. This game supposedly evolved from whiskey poker, which was created in the eighteenth century, and was intended to be faster than standard rummy.

Gin rummy rules are not difficult to follow. The game is played with the standard deck of fifty-two cards, and the values of cards are as follows: face cards (jack, queen, and king) are worth ten points, aces are worth one points, and the spot cards are worth their index value. Scoring more points than your opponent is the objective in gin rummy, and the basic strategy is to form melds and eliminate deadwood, with the distinct purpose of improving your hand.

There are two types of melds, runs and sets. The runs refer to several cards in sequence, typically more than three, and all of the same suit. The sets are formed of three or four cards of the same rank. It is not allowed to intersect melds, meaning that if a set and a run share a common card, only one of them will be counted as a meld, and the rest of the cards in the other meld are deadwood. All the cards that are not in any meld are referred to as deadwood. The sum of points of deadwood cards is called deadwood count, and is calculated according to the values presented above.

As far as dealing is concerned, the first dealer is chosen randomly, although standard gin rummy rules say that players have top cut the deck, and let the low card deal. The turn to deal alternates from round to round. Each player is dealt a ten-card hand, one at a time. After twenty cards have been dealt to both players, the next card, the twenty-first, known as the upcard, is turned face-up and starts the discard pile, which is placed in a central location. What is left of the deck (thirty-one cards) forms the stock and is placed face down beside the upcard. The game starts with each player arranging his or her hand. The non-dealing player can take the upcard and play first. If he/she chooses not to, then this option passes to the other player, the dealer. If he/she does not need the upcard either, the non-dealing player starts the game by taking a card from the stock.

The basic strategy in gin rummy is reducing deadwood count, and doing so by discarding high cards that are not in a meld, melding cards to create runs and sets, and knock quickly, before your opponent does. The standard gin rummy rules state that a player is not allowed to knock when he or she has more than ten points of deadwood. On the other hand, the player is has to knock if he or she has no deadwood points left. Knocking refers to laying the hand out with melds clearly separated from the deadwood. The opponent, also referred to as defending player, can reduce his or her deadwood count by laying off the deadwood cards that fit into the other player’s runs or sets.

Gin rummy rules are not complicated, and although it may seem that it all comes down to card luck, and experienced player, who is aware of all rules and strategies will definitely outperform a beginner.

Erectile Dysfunction, or ED, can happen to anyone. Thankfully, most cases are only temporary. It’s defined as the inability to maintain or sustain an erection. Has that happened to you? An estimated 25 to 30 million men will encounter impotence during their lifetime, and a 1999 the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) reported that 22 out of every 1000 men sought help for erectile dysfunction.

While it’s a normal problem, most men feel ashamed. This bruise to their ego can affect other aspects of their life, and affect their self confidence. With a little information though, erectile dysfunction isn’t a death sentence.

The causes are either physiological or psychological. The physiologically-cause erectile dysfunction is usually a symptom of some greater health concern, like diabetes for instance. Psychological ED is caused by the brain’s inability to connect with sexual thoughts, or are distracted by something else.

Erectile dysfunction is often characterized as psychological if erection is possible sometimes. For instance, are you able to get an erection during your sleep? Are you unable to perform on some nights only?

Thankfully the problem is both temporary and easy to fix, if action of some sort is taken. No need for surgery or other risky measures. It may be as simple as making sure you get a good night’s sleep, a physiological and fairly common cause of ED. Men think that they should be able to perform all the time, at all times. It’s just not possible. In this case it’s your body’s way of telling you to sleep and don’t over exert yourself – to conserve your energy.

Cutting out drugs, alcohol and smoking can help as well, as these are three physical factors that can cause erectile dysfunction, both temporary and not. Illegal and some forms of prescribed drugs have been known to cause ED, and everyone’s heard the term “whiskey dick.” Shortly after quitting smoking it has been found that erection problems quickly clear up. In general a healthy lifestyle helps, in both diet and exercise.

Stress is the biggest cause of temporary ED. Maybe you just can’t take your mind off work, no matter how hard you try. Or the excitement of being with someone new and the expectations for sex intimidate you. Learning to relax is necessary. Try massage, breathing, and other relaxation techniques. But sometimes it just isn’t enough. Worry, guilt, and other negative and distracting emotions play into temporary ED, and should be dealt with accordingly if you want the problem to go away for good.

Some sort of aid, like Herbal Erection Pills, are a big help. Herbal Erection Pills are growing in usage among men each and every year. There are still millions of men struggling with erectile dysfunction, even though they were prescribed some type of medication to treat ED. Now, there are a few legitimate Herbal Erection Pills on the market that work equally or better than medications you receive from a doctor. Some of these medications you were prescribed from your doctor have so many chemicals that it makes your erection problems worse than before. So, the best option is to look into Herbal Erection Pills that are all natural and are safe for the body. However, it’s always best to check with your doctor before using an Herbal Erection Pills to make sure you’re not allergic to any of the herbs included in the pills.

With the numerous styles and sizes of outdoor fountains that are available, you will not have any difficulty finding one to suit the size of your garden. The sight and sound or falling water is very soothing and enhance the ambiance of the garden. If you have a large backyard area, you might want to look at the free standing fountains. There are also styles that attach to a wall and smaller models that will fit quite well on your patio.

Depending on the theme you want to create, you can actually make your own outdoor wall fountains using natural materials. You may want to make the fountain into a space where birds will come to have a drink.

You may want to recreate an old-fashioned scene in your garden, in which case a barrel trough made with an old-fashioned pump and a cast off whiskey barrel will create the look of a country garden in your backyard. By using two or three of these barrels, you can actually create a small waterfall in which water trickles from one level to the next.

Some of the wall mounted water fountains can be attached to an existing pond on your property so that you don’t have to disturb any or your water pipes or tear up any landscaping to complete the installation.

You can tuck the fountain into a bed of flowers or arrange the flowers around the outskirts of the fountain and install a bench where you can sit and enjoy your scenic surroundings in peace and quiet. A tabletop fountain is perhaps one of the easiest fountains to set up and will stand for many years on a table on your patio or porch.

Outdoor fountains must be made of durable material in order to withstand the outdoor environment. Most are made from precast concrete, but if you really want to have a natural look check out the fountains made from reconstituted stone.

To avoid having the fountain look out of place try to replicate the natural stone of your region as closely as possible. If you want to further enhance the fountain by adding fish, you should stay away from old world wall fountains that contain lead because this is hazardous for fish.

There are many retailers, online and off, that sell outdoor fountains in many different varieties. If you visit your local garden center, you should know that it is impossible for one location to stock every kind of fountain. If there is nothing there that catches your eye, ask whether or not the store has a catalog from which you can order or a website where you can browse the many styles and place your order online.

Freestanding outdoor fountains are usually the focal point of a garden and should be placed where they can be easily seen. Such a fountain requires a submersible pump in the pedestal portion and you need to be able to get at it easily to clean it from time to time.

During the fall, you should drain all the water from the fountain and the pump and remove the pump to protect it during the winter. If you are not able to store the fountain itself indoors for the colder months of the year, you should take care to wrap it so it won’t suffer any damage from the ice and snow.

Some scientists believe that whiskey may be one of the keys to preventing the Big C.

For a quite a number of years, liquor has been known not only to bring destructive intoxication and addiction upon its patrons, but also as deterrent to a healthy lifestyle. But as a potential weapon against cancer? Sounds controversial.

Rumors that single malt whiskey may be a tool to combat cancer have begun circulating recently. Whether it actually holds any water has yet to be proven. According to one of the theory’s proponents, a consultant to the whiskey industry, Dr. Jim Swan, the antioxidants present in whiskey, particularly ellagic acid, can reduce the risk of developing cancer, since this acid fights the unstable atoms that aid in rapid cell replication. He added that the more cells were produced, the more likely that rogue cancer cells will be born. “Whiskey can protect you from cancer and science proves it,” he said, speaking at the EuroMedLab 2005 conference in Glasgow. Dr Swan explained that ellagic acid, which is in greater concentration in whiskey than in red wine, breaks down the harmful free radicals present in our body.

However, Cancer Research UK remains unconvinced. The agency has raised concerns that what Dr Swan and his supporters are pushing might mislead consumers into drinking excessive amounts of whiskey just to avoid cancer. Cancer Research noted that liquor intake can eventually lead to certain kinds of cancer, such as those in the esophagus, throat, mouth, bowel and liver. Dr Swan’s idea that whiskey can prevent cancer also received criticism, owing mostly to an absence of population data supporting them. Contrariwise, according to the agency’s head of cancer information Lesley Walker, there exists evidence that high alcohol consumption does increase cancer risks. Ms Walker noted that while ellagic acid is a formidable antioxidant and may greatly aid in the fight against cancer, its presence in whiskey is not reason enough for people to begin drinking up, especially as ellagic acid can also be found in certain fruits.

The concept that a certain type of alcohol may help deter cancer is novel and, for frequent drinkers, even noble. What liquor patron would ignore this theory? But, still, Dr Swan’s ideas remain untested and there does not exist any known positive link between whiskey and cancer. If there would be something that suggest this is true sometime in the future, then it will be considered revolutionary. However, in the absence of adequate information at present, whiskey as a deterrent to cancer is a dubious thought. While we all hope and pray that an alternative treatment to cancer will surface soon, this is probably not the time to become this optimistic about whiskey‘s alleged benefits.

Bad breath, also known by the medical term halitosis, is often caused by inadequate oral hygiene. However it’s not the only cause, with other possibilities including:

  • Dental caries
  • Respiratory tract infections (nose, throat, lungs, sinus)
  • Infected gums
  • Constipation
  • Indigestion
  • Inadequate diet
  • Fever
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Kidney or liver dysfunctions
  • Alcohol abuse
  • The reason we often wake up in the morning with bad breath is because our mouths tend to dry out overnight. Many people breathe through their mouths while asleep, leading to poor hydration. A good quantity of saliva is necessary to wash your mouth free of the bacteria that cause bad breath.

A lack of proper nutrition can also cause bad breath when your body is trying to decompose the stored fats and proteins. The process of degradation releases certain metabolic products that have a bad smell, and so when you breathe out your breath smells bad as well.

Coffee can also be a culprit in bad breath. When you drink coffee, small particles are placed on your tooth enamel or directly into your digestive system. So when you exhale, the bad smell comes back up into your mouth. Coffee isn’t the only offender in this respect – beer, whiskey, wine and other alcoholic drinks all have a very similar effect. That’s why many alcoholics have bad breath.

So if you have bad breath, what can you do to eradicate it?

  • Avoid using condiments on your food, as the smell can last for hours. Oils with a pungent smell are major offenders and the smell can last up to 24 hours
  • Make sure you gargle regularly with a quality mouthwash
  • Hydrate your body. Drink lots of water that’s as free from impurities such as suspended particles and chemicals as possible
  • Keep your mouth clean. Use a good toothbrush, floss daily, and visit your dentist regularly
  • Follow a green diet to hydrate your body and remove toxins from
  • Be very careful when choosing a mouthwash, because many of the mouthwash manufacturers add colorants, alcohol and flavors to make them palatable. While mouthwash can help eliminate bad breath, it can also irritate your tongue, gums and the mucous membrane if you use it too often. So be sensible with it.

If you find that despite all your best efforts the bad breath persists, then it’s a good idea to visit your doctor. Some bad breath is caused by problems in the digestive system, so it’s important to have that possibility checked out when other measures have failed.

For ways to make your breath smell better try visiting http://www.bad-breath-relief.com where you will quickly and easily find a variety of tips, advice and resources on how to turn bad breath into fresh breath.
